Marvel has greenlighted Cloak and Dagger for a new series for the TV channel Freeform (the channel formerly known as ABC Family). The series has been described as a romance or super hero love story, based on the titular characters of Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson. The pair first appeared in Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #64, and had a number of guest appearances after that. The pair got their own bi-monthly series after that. Super villains rarely made an appearance in the comic as the duo focused on fighting the drug trade and explored the idea of vigilantism.
The show has been targeted towards young adults which dovetails nicely with Freeform’s audience of 14-34 year olds. No writer has been attached to the project yet, and ABC is searching for a co-producer. Variety describes Freeform’s Cloak and Dagger series as being more skewed towards a young adult audience than Marvel’s current shows, focusing on the romance between Tyrone and Tandy, described as “two teenagers from very different backgrounds” who “find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love.”
