Ok, so this is just a Gladiator reboot, I thought as the trailer started. Wealthy nobleman becomes a slave, has to fight his way back to glory. Then Morgan Freeman comes on, turns on his “Fatherly Here’s What’s Going Down” voice and explains it’s not your regular arena. It’s a Roman Deathrace. Oh, ok. So it’s The Fast and the Furious. In Rome. With gladiators. Nope. It’s Ben Hur.
People older than dirt will remember Ben Hur as Charleton Heston‘s third most famous role (after the guy who wanted those damn dirty apes to get their hands off him, and the old guy who lays a literal Biblical smackdown on the nation of Egypt) back in 1959. Now Ben Hur is back in an epic reboot 55 years in the making. Check out the trailer first:
The story’s pretty simple: Ben Hur is a prominent Jewish nobleman who gets sold into slavery by his conniving brother, who also has his mother and sister crucified because he’s like, bad or something. Thirty years later he gets a chance for revenge by racing him to death in a no-holds-barred chariot race. Cue the low-horsepower Mad Max stunts (horse pun intended) and other medieval hijinks.
Ben Hur stars Jack Huston (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Freeman (Oblivion), and the guy who played Xerxes in 300 as Jesus. It’s directed by Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch) and hits theaters on August 12.
