Pete’s Dragon Goes Hard-Gore Gritty Reboot

Pete’s Dragon, when it came out in the 70s, was your traditional straight-to-DVD schlock that Disney used to put out before they owned such subsidiaries as Marvel and Star Wars. Little orphan boy has a pet dragon no one can see except him, and hijinks ensue. Well, now that Disney has discovered that rebooting all their old cartoons as live-action fare is a veritable gold-mine, here come all the cartoons. We’ve seen a lot of the princesses, from Sleeping Beauty to Beauty and the Beast to Cinderella. This year we start to see all the Disney orphan boys. Mowgli and the Jungle Book’s on the way, and now so is Pete’s Dragon.

Starring Robert Redford (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Bryce Howard (Jurassic World), the trailer makes it seem that Pete’s Dragon is going to be less about boyish play with dragons, and more tense and action-oriented. Watch it and see. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

Pete’s Dragon is slated for release August 12.
