Elon Musk’s SpaceX has revealed its plans for the first orbital test flight of its 160-foot Starship rocket in a filing to the Federal Communications Commission made public on Thursday.

According to the plans, the test flight will originate from the company’s Boca Chica, Texas facilities. The booster stage will separate around three minutes into flight and land in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 20 miles from the shore.

The Starship will then continue flying between the Florida Straights and achieve orbit until performing a powered, targeted landing roughly 62 miles of the northwest coast of Kauai “in a soft ocean landing,” the filing says.

The entire flight is expected to last around 90 minutes. The maximum altitude reached by the Starship is expected to be around 72 miles.

The document did not name a specific date for the test flight. Musk and SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell have said previously that it could happen as early as later this year or as late as March 2022.

SpaceX said its goal with the orbital flight will be to learn more about entry dynamics and get a better understanding of what the vehicle experiences in a flight regime. SpaceX said the data gathered will be applied to vehicle design and allow the company to design better models  for its use in internal simulations.

The FCC filing comes after SpaceX successfully landed its fifth test flight test earlier this month. The uncrewed SN15 Starship launched from SpaceX’s Boca Chica facility. During the six-minute flight, the spacecraft rocketed upward, conducted a “belly flop” maneuver and finally righted itself before landing vertically.

Intel collaborates with QuTech, an advanced research center for quantum internet and quantum computing, to develop a new cryogenic control SoC called the Horse Ridge. The tech giant manufacturer claimed that this new chipset is a breakthrough in quantum computing.

A “Mistral” supercomputer, installed in 2016, at the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ, or Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum) on June 7, 2017 in Hamburg, Germany. The DKRZ provides HPC (high performance computing) and associated services for climate research institutes in Germany. Its high performance computer and storage systems have been specifically selected with respect to climate and Earth system modeling.

Right now, researchers and experts are finding it hard to understand quantum computations since they are complex mathematical equations. On the other hand, they also deal with quantum states, specifically superposition and entanglement.

Because of these, traditional computers are currently unable to perform quantum computations because they don’t have the ability to harness the phenomenon of quantum mechanics. Since this is the case, experts are forced to create quantum supercomputers that are specifically developed to perform quantum computing.

The breakthrough involves harnessing the power of lithium-metal batteries, which are capable of holding substantially more energy and charge in a fraction of the time compared to lithium-ion batteries that are currently used in everything from smartphones to Tesla vehicles.

Until now, scientists have been unable to create a lithium-metal battery stable enough to be used in commercial applications.

The development, made by a team at Harvard University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), allows this next-generation batter to be charged and discharge at least 10,000 times, which would increase the lifetime of electric vehicles to that of of their gasoline counterparts – while simultaneously increasing their range and reducing their charge time.

“A lithium-metal battery is considered the holy grail for battery chemistry because of its high capacity and energy density,” said Xin Li, an associate professor at SEAS.

“But the stability of these batteries has always been poor… By studying their fundamental thermodynamics, we can unlock superior performance and harness their abundant opportunities.”

The research, published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, involves an innovative multi-layer approach to assemble the battery, which allows it to be self-healing and solve the issue of degradation.

It is hoped that the design can be developed commercially in order to meet the growing needs of the electric vehicle industry.

“This proof-of-concept design shows that lithium-metal solid-state batteries could be competitive with commercial lithium-ion batteries. And the flexibility and versatility of our multilayer design makes it potentially compatible with mass production procedures in the battery industry,” said Dr Li.

“Scaling it up to the commercial battery won’t be easy and there are still some practical challenges, but we believe they will be overcome.”

Researchers at the University of Southampton have developed a new way of using nanomaterials to identify and enrich skeletal stem cells – a discovery which could eventually lead to new treatments for major bone fractures and the repair of lost or damaged bone.

Working together, a team of physicists, chemists and tissue engineering experts used specially designed gold nanoparticles to ‘seek out’ specific human bone stem cells – creating a fluorescent glow to reveal their presence among other types of cells and allow them to be isolated or ‘enriched’.

The researchers concluded their new technique is simpler and quicker than other methods and up to 50-500 times more effective at enriching stem cells.

The study, led by Professor of Musculoskeletal Science, Richard Oreffo and Professor Antonios Kanaras of the Quantum, Light and Matter Group in the School of Physics and Astronomy, is published in ACS Nano – an internationally recognized multidisciplinary journal.

In laboratory tests, the researchers used gold nanoparticles – tiny spherical particles made up of thousands of gold atoms – coated with oligonucleotides (strands of DNA), to optically detect the specific messenger RNA (mRNA) signatures of skeletal stem cells in bone marrow. When detection takes place, the nanoparticles release a fluorescent dye, making the stem cells distinguishable from other surrounding cells, under microscopic observation. The stem cells can then be separated using a sophisticated fluorescence cell sorting process.

Stem cells are cells that are not yet specialized and can develop to perform different functions. Identifying skeletal stems cells allows scientists to grow these cells in defined conditions to enable the growth and formation of bone and cartilage tissue – for example, to help mend broken bones.

Among the challenges posed by our aging population is the need for novel and cost-effective approaches to bone repair. With one in three women and one in five men at risk of osteoporotic fractures worldwide, the costs are significant, with bone fractures alone costing the European economy €17 billion and the US economy $20 billion annually.

Within the University of Southampton’s Bone and Joint Research Group, Professor Richard Oreffo and his team have been looking at bone stem cell based therapies for over 15 years to understand bone tissue development and to generate bone and cartilage. Over the same time-period, Professor Antonios Kanaras and his colleagues in the Quantum, Light and Matter Group have been designing novel nanomaterials and studying their applications in the fields of biomedical sciences and energy. This latest study effectively brings these disciplines together and is an exemplar of the impact collaborative, interdisciplinary working can bring.

Skeletal stem cell based therapies offer some of the most exciting and promising areas for bone disease treatment and bone regenerative medicine for an aging population. The current studies have harnessed unique DNA sequences from targets we believe would enrich the skeletal stem cell and, using Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) we have been able to enrich bone stem cells from patients. Identification of unique markers is the holy grail in bone stem cell biology and, while we still have some way to go; these studies offer a step change in our ability to target and identify human bone stem cells and the exciting therapeutic potential therein.”

Professor Kanaras said: “The appropriate design of materials is essential for their application in complex systems. Customizing the chemistry of nanoparticles we are able to program specific functions in their design.

“In this research project, we designed nanoparticles coated with short sequences of DNA, which are able to sense HSPA8 mRNA and Runx2 mRNA in skeletal stem cells and together with advanced FACS gating strategies, to enable the assortment of the relevant cells from human bone marrow.

“An important aspect of the nanomaterial design involves strategies to regulate the density of oligonucleotides on the surface of the nanoparticles, which help to avoid DNA enzymatic degradation in cells. Fluorescent reporters on the oligonucleotides enable us to observe the status of the nanoparticles at different stages of the experiment, ensuring the quality of the endocellular sensor.”

Both lead researchers also recognize that the accomplishments were possible due to the work of all the experienced research fellows and PhD students involved in this research as well as collaboration with Professor Tom Brown and Dr Afaf E-Sagheer of the University of Oxford, who synthesized a large variety of functional oligonucleotides.

The scientists are currently applying single cell RNA sequencing to the platform technology developed with partners in Oxford and the Institute for Life Sciences (IfLS) at Southampton to further refine and enrich bone stem cells and assess functionality. The team propose to then move to clinical application with preclinical bone formation studies to generate proof of concept studies.

The work has been possible through a BBSRC project grant to Professor Oreffo and Professor Kanaras.

Spaceflight Inc., a Seattle-based company, claims that it has won a NASA contract to handle the launch logistics for several satellites whose primary focus is on atmospheric drag. The twin CubeSats have the Low-Latitude Ionosphere/ Thermosphere Enhancements in Density (LLITED) mission and enter into space via the SpaceX Falcon 9 orbit in 2021. This launch will become the debut launch via Spaceflight’s Sherpa-LTC transfer vehicle, commonly known as a space tug or OTV.

This year, another space tug’s spaceflight type called Sherpa-FX successfully launched over twelve spacecraft following a Falcon 9 liftoff in January. Sherpa-LTC is a step ahead of the FX since it includes an in-orbit propulsion technological system. It is a chemical-based system under the Benchmark Space Systems development team and gives Sherpa-LTC a chance to move between various orbital positions. The company’s mission plan starts with a round of satellites liftoffs into the earth’s orbit. A shift will allow the Sherpa to enter into space and deploy the lilted satellites into another orbit.

The Spaceflight Inc. government business development director, Valerie Skarupa, stated that Spaceflight’s full-service offers with the Sherpa vehicles increase chances for universities, NASA, and various organizations to deploy satellites at various orbital destinations. There is news that another OTV type, the Sherpa-LTE, will enter the market with a powerful electric propulsion system.

Each of the LLITED spacecraft measures 4 by 4 by 6 inches, excluding their solar arrays. The mission planning teams have scientists and engineers from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, The Aerospace Corp., and the University of New Hampshire. These satellites will offer a thorough investigation of equatorial temperature and wind problems regarding the neutral atmosphere, ranging between 300 to 500 kilometers. Also, it will analyze the Equatorial ionization issues in areas with electrically charged particles.

The principal investigator for these satellites from Aerospace Corp. claims that the CubeSat mission includes investigating these situations simultaneously in the Equatorial Area, a milestone in the on-orbit satellite operation. With the well-detailed analysis, experts can better understand atmospheric density change and the capacity of drag satellites encounter. Spaceflight Inc. will mark its anniversary this year after ten years since its founding and have worked on about 350 satellites in 37 missions using eight launch vehicles.

Researchers at the University of San Diego have developed a new artificial neuron device that can run neural computations with 100 to 1000 times less energy and area than the current CMOS-based hardware.

The recent report was published in a paper on March 18 in Nature Nanotechnology.

In order to generate the input for one of the connected layers of artificial neurons in neural networks, a mathematical calculation called a non-linear activation function must be applied. However, this application requires a lot of computer power and circuitry due to the need to transfer data between the memory and external processor.

The researchers at UC San Diego developed a new nano-meter sized device that can carry this activation function out much more efficiently.

Duygu Kuzum is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering.

“Neural network computation in hardware gets increasingly inefficient as the neural network models get larger and more complex,” said Kuzum. “We developed a single nanoscale artificial neuron device that implements these computations in hardware in a very area- and energy-efficient way.”

The study was led by both Kuzum and Ph.D student Shangheon Oh, and they collaborated with UC San Diego physics professor Ivan Schuller, who leads a DOE Energy Frontier Research Center. The center is involved with developing hardware implementations of energy-efficient artificial neural networks.

The New Device
The newly developed device relies on a rectified linear unit, which is one of the most common activation functions used in neural network training. It requires hardware that can undergo gradual changes in resistance, which is what the engineers aimed towards. The device can gradually switch from an insulating to conducting state with a small of amount of heat.

Termed a Mott transition, this switch occurs in an extremely thin layer of vanadium dioxide, and above this layer is a nanowire heater made of titanium and gold. The vanadium dioxide layer slowly heats up when current flows through the nanowire, and this causes a slow and controlled switch from insulating to conducting.

Oh is the study’s first author.

“This device architecture is very interesting and innovative,” said Oh. “In this case, we flow current through a nanowire on top of the material to heat it and induce a very gradual resistance change.”

Implementing the Device
For implementation, the team fabricated an array of activation devices and a synaptic device array, followed by the integration of the two on a custom printed circuit board. They were then connected together, resulting in a hardware version of a neural network.

The network was used to process an image through edge detection, identifying the outlines and edges of objects in the image. The integrated hardware system demonstrated its ability to perform convolution operations that are important for various types of deep neural networks.

“Right now, this is a proof of concept,” Kuzum said. “It’s a tiny system in which we only stacked one synapse layer with one activation layer. By stacking more of these together, you could make a more complex system for different applications.”
